Nothing like the last minute.

I didn't quite get everything finished last night, but pretty close.  I made full use of the massive amount of lights I have added to the tractor.  No flash, no night mode required.

I went down the driveway and got the markers put in.  I decided to do the driveway markers first since I wasn't sure what the chains would do to my not-yet-packed gravel, and the more I thought about it, the chains can be done anytime.  Once the ground is frozen though, the markers are no longer possible.  I would like to think that I don't really need the markers anymore and that I know where my driveway is, but better safe than sorry, and I can't put them in later if it turns out I need them.

All the little white specs are markers.

I also moved the clothesline over towards the grill.  This will make it easier to clear the slab, which I usually do with a combination of the grading blade and the bucket.

I started to jack up the tractor to put the chains on, but it started raining, and I didn't really feel like putting them on in the rain.  I can do them when I get back though regardless of frozen ground and snow cover.  The anti-gel diesel additive is in, so it should run.  I had forgotten that my jack doesn't fit underneath the cross bar on the back, so I will probably do each side individually.  I need to pack today, so there won't be any progress or posts until after Thanksgiving.

Winter Projects:
  • Install chains and anti-gel in tractor.
  • Get power center out of truck.
  • Fix shed floor.
  • Review options for house (mobile home vs stick built vs modular)
  • Put up more shelving/hooks in the carport

Beautiful day, almost ready.

I went up yesterday and paid my property taxes.  While I was up there, I fired up the pushmower.  It really didn't want to start, but it did eventually, and I ran it out of gas.  The mower is now ready.

Today was gorgeous.  It was supposed to be rainy, but the rain got pushed off.  I really didn't want to come back to work today after lunch.  It turns out today would have been fine for concrete, though by the time I knew that it was too late to do a piling.

Instead I went up at lunch and did the snowblower.  The oil was dirty.  It took forever to drain out too.  I started with just a small brick under the front to tip it back.  I quickly upgraded it to a full on cinder block, and it still took almost a half hour to drain.  I only got ~20oz out of it too, it is supposed to take 26.

I am not sure what kind of oil it is, but it certainly seemed thicker than 5w-30, which is what the engine calls for.  It was thick and it also appears to have permanently tinted the dipstick.  This was taken after trying to rub it off.

I got the oil changed and fresh gas put in it though, and it started unusually quickly and easily, the instant the button made contact it was running, and I was able to throttle it down and turn the choke off immediately, which while good is abnormal for this unit.  Maybe it is because it is 60 out, but my guess is that apparently the oil that was in it was choking it.  It runs like a new engine now.  The scary part is that I bought this from Troy Powersports, an actual dealer and repair shop, not a random dude off the internet, and they still did it wrong.  I certainly won't go back there for any work.

Unfortunately since the snow blower took too long, I didn't get anything else done.  I did get the pile of screws I mentioned a post or two ago picked up while I was waiting, but that was it.  It isn't supposed to get below freezing tonight, so I will likely have to go up at lunch again tomorrow.  Maybe I will try to do the tractor tonight and the driveway markers tomorrow.  At some point I need to pack for my trip too.  I guess waiting to do the tractor wouldn't be the end of the world if it comes to it.

Time for new shoes.

I got home last night and promptly rammed my shin into the stairs (better than falling off them though).  Everything was frozen by the time I got home last night.  Yes, those are my slippers, and they did much better on the ice than my regular shoes.  My shoes are in need of replacement.

I got the totes and everything stacked in the back corner.  I didn't bother putting gravel down first.  I put the bug zapper in one of the totes.  I brushed off the outside of it, and that will have to do.

The carport is nice and cleaned out.

I tried to start the mower to run it out of gas, but it apparently won't start when it is in the 20s.  It is one of those stupid no choke no primer things, so I will have to go up at some point when it is a little warmer.  I pulled it out of the carport and put it on the slab so it can get some sun.

I need to go up at some point this week to pay my property taxes, so I might do that today and get the mower wrapped up.  It is also supposed to be really warm on Thursday (albeit rainy), so if it doesn't start today, it should on Thursday.  I might go up on Thursday anyways to change the oil in the snowblower and put in driveway markers.

Time is running out

I was at the LAN last weekend, so no real progress updates.  This was my setup.  I got a chance to use an actual gaming laptop provided by Stefan.  A gaming-capable laptop is a candidate to replace my desktop.  I have been looking off and on at replacements for a while now.  That will likely be a winter project though.

I did get a harsh reminder when I got home that winter is on its way.  The severe thunderstorms that rolled through New England over the weekend were apparently thunder-snowstorms in Sullivan.  Despite being 50 there was still snow there over a day later.

I was a little confused when I got home since I saw a Wal-Mart.com box sitting on my steps.  I hadn't ordered anything from them, but apparently Amazon sent me a new water jug for the camper in a Wal-Mart.com box.  Not sure how that works, the Amazon seller was not affiliated with Wal-Mart as far as I can tell.  I am also not entirely convinced that this jug is what it said it was; it might be a cheap knockoff that they stuck an Ozark Trail tag on, but as long as it works, I am not sure I care.

With the snow imparting more of a sense of urgency, I need to come up with a plan to complete the winterization items.  I didn't want to, but I will likely have to complete them in the dark this week, since I am headed back down on Friday, meaning no daylight between now and then.  It is crazy how my whole autumn just kind of disappeared.

Classic started everything, finished nothing evening.

The big thing I did yesterday was I sold the Craftsman.  I didn't get much for it, but I at least recouped what I had paid for parts the last few years.  The guy thought it was a steal for him, though I have seen more than a few listed for free on Craigslist in the last few months that had a shorter list of defects.  So it worked out for both parties.

After getting it loaded up and gone, I started a bunch of things, but didn't really complete any.  I pulled out the snowblower.  It is very webby.  I didn't get the oil in it changed, I would rather have daylight for that.

I put stabilizer in the mower and the diesel additive in the tractor.  The chains aren't on it yet though, so that isn't completed.

I pulled the bug zapper down, though I haven't figured out how I am going to clean it yet.  Last time it pretty much cleaned itself, one rainstorm with wind and most of it came off before I took it down.  This year that didn't appear to happen.

I also took down my yellowjacket trap.  Its kill count: 0.  I probably won't get another one.

It feels nice that I can stage stuff in the carport again. The back corner is empty.  I am planning on putting the totes from the slab here when they dry off, I put them in the carport last night.  I am debating whether to put gravel down first or not.

A couple other odds and ends: the replacement for the Koolatron arrived yesterday.  Not sure how I feel about the piezo being in the lid, it will take a lot more mechanical abuse up there.

I went and got the propane tank filled.  I can grill again.

I found the key for my snowblower.  The wiring for the key broke off years ago though.

As I was moving the totes I had forgotten that there was a tote of screws that I still need to clean up.

Getting close.  I started most of the items left before winter, but didn't complete anything.

Rocks and toys.

After doing some after work shopping, I got home and decided to finish spreading the gravel in the carport.  Even though it hasn't been started since spring or moved since last year, the Craftsman fired right up and drove right out without issue, which was nice.  I didn't even have to fill the tires, they all still had air in them.

I completed the spreading of the gravel in there, so I can finish moving stuff back in.  I will probably just run over it a few times with the tractor to pack it first.  I didn't put enough gravel in there, so I didn't have to move the snowblower and stuff out, but that can wait.  The back of the carport is just storage anyways.

I also pulled out my other propane tank.  The 1 lb to 20 lb adapter came in last night.  This is how I envision the grill looking.

The tank is empty, but it is apparently still in date.  This definitely implies that I got this tank switched with the other one, but oh well.

A couple of other things: the hampers for the camper came in.  The one on the left is a hanging dual compartment, the other is a much smaller hanging one.  I will have to try them out to see which one works better in the camper.  This is the planned solution to my laundry all falling off the bar when I drove down the road.

While I might get some work done tonight, I am mostly going to be prepping for the LAN party this weekend, so this will likely be the last post until next week some time.

No movement on the checklist.  I fleshed out what is left of the winterization work into the checklist though.  I removed the things that aren't going to happen or got postponed until next year.

Abnormally productive in the dark.

I was unusually productive last night considering by about 3PM I was braindead.  I think it was mostly I was tired when I got home and kept doing stuff to keep myself awake until bedtime.

Even though winterizing isn't on the checklist, that is a lot of what I did last night.  My hose is turned off.

I also pulled out my snow shovels.

The bike is hung up.

I cleaned off the Craftsman.  I hit the key, expecting the battery to be dead, but it spun right over.  I still intend to try to get rid of it before winter.  It is good that I will be able to drive it out though, it would suck to have to lift it up over the gravel piles I put in there.

I also cleaned out the carport a bit.  I have a lot of crap to go to the dump, but all the boxes are out of there now, the random wood chunks from the chop saw are out, it is back to mostly just equipment again.

I apparently didn't grab a picture, but I also moved the storage container up tight to the carport, which is where it will live for the winter, and similarly pushed all the patio chairs and whatnot over there.

The only winterization left is to switch out the lawnmowers (and run them out of gas) and snowblower in the carport, and put the anti-gel and chains on the tractor.  I have to move all that stuff out to finish spreading the gravel though, so it should happen soon.

None of this stuff was on the checklist (though it really should have been), so no movement.

I hate daylight savings. Rocky productive weekend.

I got quite a bit done this weekend.  I left a little early on Friday and actually had enough daylight left to get some stuff done.

The first thing I did was flip the carport back over.  I just attached straps to the corners, and pivoted it while keeping it from flexing too bad back over the way it flipped originally.  It isn't heavy so it wasn't difficult, and worked surprisingly easy.  I had more control with the two straps than I expected.

Surprisingly, when I opened it up and peered in, there was no apparent structural damage.  All the poles and beams still looked straight, though the structure was a little twisted.

I started to disassemble it, but realized that I hadn't put the storage bin together yet.  This is where I stopped.

The storage bin is assembled.  It is overkill for the volume of the carport, but it was the smallest I could find that I could put the 54" poles in.

I got that done just in the nick of time.

Saturday was a tractor day.  I got the power center charged up, with the intent of pulling it out.  I thought I had screw in hooks, but apparently I didn't, or at least not ones beefy enough to handle that kind of weight.  I will pick up some this week.

I greased the tractor.  It didn't take much grease, I have been pretty diligent about doing it.

It was close enough to being due.  It is every ten hours, which seems a bit excessive to me, but since ~90% of the tractor's hours are loader use I stick to it.

I started more of the driveway.  I at least need to get that done before winter.  I noticed that the grading blade on the back started dragging even when fully raised however, so I checked the hydraulic fluid (which was still in the good zone) and just tightened up the three point hitch.  To be honest, I don't really understand how this could have loosened up; you have to drop the blade to adjust it, and this was the first time in over a year the blade has been off the tractor.  I use it mostly as a counter weight for the bucket, so the blade hasn't seen a lot of action.

This was as far as I got on Saturday, I went to a cookout Saturday night.

Andy made fresh apple cider donuts which certainly helped me put on a few pounds. I brought cider and egg nog.  I heated some of the cider in the crock pot since it was a little chilly, but the crock pot doesn't seal nearly as well as I hoped.  Thankfully I had a towel wrapped around it and didn't pour a bunch of it in my truck, but I arrived with a wet towel and noticeably less cider than I left with.

Sunday I started more of the driveway, but after lunch moved over to the taking down the carport for some variety.  I already had the tractor out, so I used it as a transporter.  Most of the tape I put on the joints came right off, though some of it was a pain.

It all fit nicely in the storage container.  It didn't even fill it halfway.

So I moved a bunch of other stuff from the carport into it as well, most notably my sprayer and the wire racks I got from Mike, which I intend to set up in the shed (and maybe one in the carport if I have space) to clear out the carport.

The reason for that is I put a few bucket loads of gravel in there.  A couple of times last winter the tractor tires got frozen into the ground, since they were in a puddle which then froze.  I never had trouble getting it out, but this should ensure I won't going forward.  I didn't do much spreading; this will likely have to be done by hand because of all the stuff, and can be done at night since I have light in the carport.

I also did a couple of other odds and ends, like rearranging stuff on the slab, and I bungee corded my grill down to the table so it doesn't take a tour of the back yard.

I also finished up the driveway, or at least as much as I intend to do this winter.  I got it redone all the way down to the leech field.  The bottom portion was already fairly smooth, and I didn't have enough gravel left to do it.  To be honest, I didn't even expect to get as far as I did with the pile.

There is still a little bit left too.  If I have time, I might finish leveling the parking spot at the bottom, but that is low priority since I don't normally clear it.

Somebody needs a little practice making a straight line...

I know it isn't crushed stone, which in theory shifts less creates a more solid layer due to its rough edges catching better, but I really like this stuff.  It makes a nicer and smoother surface that I can walk on barefoot even with my feet being super-wimp.  I actually did part of the manual smoothing with the bo-rake in slippers and it didn't hurt my feet.  It took five years, but I finally have a nice driveway (well, mostly).

I am not sure how I am going to clear the driveway this winter.  I settled on getting a snowblower for the tractor, but good luck finding one right now.  I might just stick with my walk behind snowblower this year, and try to order a tractor one before November next year.  It isn't in theory supposed to be a really snowy winter, more chilly than snowy.

This completes the driveway for this year.  I didn't get around to doing the leveling in the yard and I might not.  There is only one weekend left before I go down for Thanksgiving, which is the LAN so I will likely not be around, and courtesy of daylight savings (which I hate), even if I leave early from work now, I won't have enough daylight (unless I take a half day, which is tougher to sell).  Nothing left on the checklist is critical for before winter.  I dislike postponing the shed support work, but as I mentioned in the last post, it is too cold for concrete.
