Lots of pictures, though not a ton of progress.

I woke up Friday to a surprise.

It was in the 40s and sunny though, so it didn't last long.  It only barely lasted until Saturday.  I did get a nice sunset on the drive home from work on Friday though.

Saturday was kind of chilly, and the wind was howling most of the day, so I didn't do much.  All I did on Saturday was go and get parts.  I have the plywood for the armoire and I also picked up fittings for the whole house filter.  I went to mark the plywood, and discovered that my chalk line is no more, so I will pick up another one.

Sunday was gorgeous though, so I got the itch to get outside.  I removed the old metal lip around the outside.  To be honest, I am not entirely certain what its purpose was.

I also removed the light and stuff in the back.

The guys sketchy ladder rack is also off.

The screws had started biodegrading, even despite being metal.

I cut a chunk out so I could take a look at it.  The lip of the cap is just wood encased in fiberglass.  The wood is thoroughly rotted now.

I got a little over half the first side cut off.

After that my saw blade had enough.  Most of the teeth are gone.  These blades apparently don't last very long.

The oscillating tool itself is coated in goo.  Brown goo sprayed out of the rotted wood when I was cutting it.  In addition to all the fiberglass dust, which is also terrible for tools.  Good thing this is a Harbor Freight cheapie.

I took a look at the back window.  I think I can fix it.  It looks like some rivets popped out, and that is why this side of the back window is starting to sag.

After that was done, I still didn't want to go inside, so I went and visited Anx.  He wants to build a new deck off the back of his house.  So I went and got dimensions and will whip up a design at some point this week.

I still had a little time before sunset at that point, so I stopped at Otter Brook on the way home and went for a short walk.  There was more snow coverage there than I expected.  Even my yard is losing coverage fast, and I am higher elevation than Otter Brook.

The water levels are high.

The beach and pond are still frozen.  That is the dam waay in the distance.

You can see the ice melting around the rocks though, which is kind of cool.

The cap actually isn't on my list of winter projects, so I have added it.

Short post, visiting weekend.

I didn't do too much during the week.  Laziness won out, except for Thursday where I had some surprise snow to clear.  I have been badgered a lot lately by the mortgage company (turns out they can close out the mortgage even though they told me they couldn't), and the insurance company is being annoying as well.

Last weekend I went down and visited Tim.  Got to see all the stuff he has been working on, and the improvements he has made to the house in Rhode Island.  It was a good time, I helped him hang up a curtain rod, and transplanted some seeds; he has already started his tomatoes, and we moved some of them into small pots from the peat starter pods.  Beat him at cribbage a couple of times.  Got to watch a sunset over the bay (I don't know its name).

I got back Sunday, and didn't really feel like doing anything.  My truck's bumper to bumper warranty has now expired, I rolled over 36k on the trip.  The truck is only 16 months old too.

I had intended on Tuesday to go and get the stuff for the armoire, but I discovered that apparently my Home Depot has cut its hours back and wasn't open (they are only open until 9PM now, it used to be 10PM).  I might go tonight.  The weather is supposed to warm up and get nicer next week, so I might have some time to build it.

Dud of a storm. Short update.

The big storm that was supposed to come in Monday night was a bit of a dud, though I am not complaining.  When I got home from shopping Monday, it was pretty clear it was passing to the south.  It was supposed to have started already when this picture was taken.

The following morning there wasn't even a dusting.  So much for 8-12", which I saw in a couple of places.

Other than that though, not too much has gone on this week.

Truck cap super bowl weekend.

I got a spare set of hands on Friday.  I lifted the cap while Anx slid in the supports.  The plan worked fine, though I am glad I gave it the extra bit of clearance.  The tailgate rubbed as I drove out.

I am not fond of the place it ended up, but it was pretty much the only option in this area.  I can see it every time I look out the window in the bedroom.

Saturday was gorgeous, but I was dead tired (it felt like I got no good sleep Friday night) so I didn't get to enjoy it too much.  I did poke around the cap some.  It looks like the cap leaks a little in the very middle of this picture (the cleaner looking spot).  I had assumed that I was going to need to at least put another layer of resin on the whole thing, just because of its age, but maybe another round of cloth on top is in order as well.

The bracket the previous guy added was in rougher shape than I originally thought.  But again, I knew I had to patch these up anyways; I don't want the ladder rack on top.  I may someday put a solar panel on it, but not anytime soon.

I did get both of the side windows to open.  They really badly need their tracks cleaned out and lubricant, which is expected.  One of the windows didn't look like it closed all the way, so I will need to see if it is just gunk in the way or something else.

Unfortunately the back window looks like the hinge isn't in great health.  I might need to replace it.  There is no tailgate in the way anymore, and this is what it looks like.

I also went and cleaned out the back of the truck, since "stuff" had started to accumulate, most notably failed clamps and straps and stuff.  One thing that I have found very annoying is the bedliner of my truck is starting to come apart.  Not as in the bedliner is defective, as in Ford's engineering team designed it stupidly (excessively cheaply?).  This doesn't snap back in anymore.  The bedliner is too thin for starters, and doesn't have enough lip for seconds.  The lack of thickness led to it expanding and contracting an awful lot, and the lack of lip means that now that it is contracted in the winter, the bedliner shrunk so much it doesn't stay put.

It drizzled in the afternoon, so the back of the truck looks clean again.

It was pretty nice Sunday too, but not quite as nice as Saturday.  Sunday I started off by making a run into town for Super Bowl snacks and a few other things.  I picked up a cheap oscillating tool.  This is what I will use to modify the base of the cap.

This is a wonderful crude paint drawing of how I plan to redo it.

The other big project for Saturday was getting the whole house filter pulled out of the tiny home.

I have noticed that even with the membrane filter I am still seeing rust and calcium buildup.  My humidifier looks awful, and this is double filtered.  The water for the humidifier gets the normal whole house treatment and is also run through a Brita, though I don't know if those reduce metals.

Sunday I decided to do some work on the cap.  The first step is to clean it.  Turns out that car wash soap is mostly water and it was frozen, so I had to thaw it.

It didn't take long though.  It is amazing how much difference a round of cleaning made.

I got the little bit of one side cleaned (the previous picture), the front, part of the top (before the bump up) and about half the other side done before I was quite chilly and the water was brown with undesirables.  It may have been nice for February, but it is still winter and not really car wash type weather.

It also exposed a couple of things that I thought were just crud before.  This is not crud, it is a hole that will require patching.  I may also convert it to run the wire for the third brake light (if I install one, they are technically required to pass inspection in NH) and maybe run the wires through for the solar panel I might someday add.

I started some laundry before I went out to pick up my Super Bowl pizza.  Turns out it was a good thing I went a bit early.  I came back to this.  What is wrong with this picture?

If you said the drain hose is missing, congratulations.  It apparently fell out. Fortunately it was a tiny load, when I pulled out the whole house filter, I grabbed the curtains from the big window so I could put them up in the living room (the blinds aren't adequate to prevent glare on the TV), so it only dumped probably 10 or so gallons on the floor, but it still made a mess.

After plopping towels down to absorb most of it, I set up fans to dry everything out.  I am unsure why it came out.  I do think I might put something on it to prevent it from happening again though.

Fortunately I got all that done before the Super Bowl.  I thought the commercials were pretty eh.  A few gave me a good chuckle, but none were overly memorable.  The halftime show was not the kind of music I typically listen to.  The game itself was pretty sloppy for a super bowl; most of the big plays were sloppy errors, not amazing feats by one team or the other.  Not a fan of the outcome.  At least the pizza was good.

I had hoped to start building the new armoire for the entryway, but never got around to it.  There is snow in the forecast tonight (though how much remains to be seen) so it will have to wait until all the snow melts out of the bed of my truck.  I am planning to go visit Tim this coming weekend, so I might not get much done then either, but I can at least get the stuff and get the whole house filter installed.

Cap is ready to come off.

I am not sure what I ate on Friday, but I didn't feel too great over the weekend.  I didn't do too much on Saturday.  Turns out my postal guy (who drives a Mercedes Sprinter, the most common van for converting) got stuck in my driveway.  It looks like he tried to drive up to the house, didn't make it, and then slid back down and off the side.  This kind of reinforces the idea that a van won't cut it, at least not until I pave the driveway.  To be fair, his appeared to be a two wheel drive, and even my truck would struggle with the driveway without 4WD (which is why it was a requirement).  All that said, the tractor had no problems at all pulling him out.

He was delivering my new rabbit fur hat (my old one was split and was one of the deacon's chair mold casualties) and my new slippers.  Turns out that these slippers are surprisingly good on ice, even better than my pack boots.

Also in this package was the second option for the under sink storage.  Not sure which one I like better.  To be honest though, I might stack them and just use both.

I did draw up the sawhorses I wanted to build to take the cap off.  I dragged myself to Home Depot as well, despite not feeling great to get the lumber.

Sunday I still wasn't feeling good, but I was feeling good enough to get some work done.  My air compressor wasn't feeling too good either (it was in the low 20s when I first fired it up), but it eventually warmed up and started behaving. The first sawhorse came out a little taller than expected.

After shortening it a bit, I got the other one built.

This is how it is supposed to work.

I just barely got the braces put on before sunset, but it is ready to use.  I might go through and add a couple more supports, but what is here is plenty good enough to put the cap on.  I just need to snag a second set of hands, and pull it off.  This is roughly where I plan to put it too.
